Learn New English Words

a Freak accident (col) - An unusual accident

Eg :- He was killed in a freak accident when a neighbour's pet pig fell on him from a balcony.

a getaway car - A car used by robbers to escape from the scene of a crime. 

Eg :- she didn't rob the banks herself but she did drive the getaway car several times.

an appraisal - A judgment of the value , performance or nature of someone or something

Eg:- She read my critical appraisal of his work.      

an applicant - A person who makes a formal request for something 

Eg:- There were over 50 applicants for the job.

an ally - A person who supports and helps someone else

Eg:-The foreign minister is the president's  closest political ally  

an adversary - A formal or literary word for enemy 

Eg:- In the epic english poem Beowulf's great adversary was the monster Grendel.  

an accomplish - A person who helps someone commit a crime

Eg:- The burglar's wife was arrested as his accomplish.

amusing(adj) - Slightly funny 

Eg:- Some of her stories are rather amusing but not funny as her poems

alight (v-uk) / disembark (v-us) -  To get out of a vehicle.

Eg:- Please alight here for Northbound trains.
    

an arch enemy (n) - A particularly bad enemy. 

Eg :- Professor Moriarty was the arch-enemy of Sherlock Holmes. 

an eccentric - A person with an unusual or odd personality.

Eg:- Salvador Dali was considered an eccentric for his strange ideas
